Affleth ap Beli Mawr
Affleth ap Beli Mawr. (Lludd ap Beli)(Llaw, Lud, Llud Llaw Erint). The Silver Haired. King of Britain.
Born (79 B.C.-S9)(about 80 B.C.) in Britain; son of Beli Mawr.
Pedigrees cast for the Powysian dynasty cite the ancestry of their Gwrtheyrn as "ap Rydeyrn ap Deheuwaint ap Endicant ap Endeyrn ap Enied ap Endos ap Enddolen ap Afallach ap Affleth ap Beli Mawr". (S4).
He is said to have married Anna of Cornwall.
He was the Legendary king of the British mentioned in Geoffrey of Monmouth's History. Lud is listed as the eldest son of Heli (or Beli), and the brother of the historically real Caswallon, which would place Lud's existence at about 60BC. Lud was that rare combination of warrior king and town planner. He rebuilt New Troy, or Trinovantum as it was then known, and renamed it KaerLud after him. This became Lud's Town or London. When he died he was buried by the city wall where Ludgate is named after him. (S?).
He died (about 18 B.C.-S9)(62 B.C.). King of Britain.
CHILDREN of Affleth ap Beli Mawr:
- Afallach ap Affleth. (Afallech). He married Athilda.
- Tasciovanus ap Lludd. (Tenuantius)(Theomantius) King of Britain. He died in 26 BC.
Wolcott (S5) says: You may have noted that we did not include another family said to have descended from Beli Mawr: the senior line which ruled the Catuvellauni tribe during the invasions of both Julius Caesar and Claudius. That branch became extinct in the male line early in the second century AD and was never involved with Welsh genealogies. It included Tecfan (Taciovanus), Cynfelyn (Cunobelinus) and Caradog (Caraticus), men familiar from Roman histories. The Welsh trace their ancestry to a younger son of Lludd called Afallach, a man who relocated to another part of the isle of Britain probably by marrying a princess from another tribe.
