Israel Burkett and Anna Maria Barbara Baltzel

Israel BURKETT. (Burchart)
Born (about 1723-S7)(in 1750-S?) in Wuerttemberg, Germany; possibly the son of (Israel?) BURKETT [F1936]..

He married Anna Maria Barbara (S5,S7,S9) about 1745. It has also been said that he married Catherine. (S?).

Israel Burkett emigrated to America in 1751 from Germany on the ship Edinburgh from Rotterdam, Captain James Russell). Burchart is the way the name is spelled on the ship's passenger list taken in 1751 when the ship arrived in Pennsylvania.

He settled first in District Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1755, in Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. In this year he acquired a warrant for land in Earl Tsp., Berks Co. Pa. Israel shows up on all the tax records in District Township between 1756 and 1760. (S9).

He was in Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1772.

Isreal Burket is in Colerain, Bedford County, Pennyslvania in 1773. (S16).

In 1774 Israel appeared on a Bedford County Civil Court Docket for the July term:
Cornelius McAulay versus Israel Burket, for debt.

By the Revolutionary War in 1776, Israel was settled across the Alleghenny mountains near his son Christopher in what had been Brothers Valley Township, but had now become Quemahoning Township. Later the township was divided and Israel's land was in Stony Creek Township. The area was then divided again in 1816 and Israel's land became part of Shade Township Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He opened a sawmill at Quemahonig.

Israel Burket is listed Quemahoning, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in the 1779 Pennsylvania Septennial Census. (S14).

Israel Burket is in the 1790 United States Federal Census in Bedford, Pennsylvania (S11):
Free White Persons - Males - Under 16: 1
Free White Persons - Males - 16 and over: 1
Free White Persons - Females: 4
Number of Household Members: 6

Israel Burket (transcribed as Burkel) is in the 1800 United States Federal Census in Londonderry, Somerset, Pennsylvania (S12):
Free White Persons - Males - 45 and over: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 15: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over: 1
Number of Household Members Under 16: 1
Number of Household Members Over 25: 2
Number of Household Members: 4

He was possibly Menonite, as he is listed in the Mennonite Vital Records. There is also an Isaac Burket listed there, son of Henry Burket (Burkhard) and Elizabeth Rinker.(S13). Are they related?

He was taxed in 1798 in Stoney Creek, Somerset County, Pennslyvania. (S9,S17).

He died (about 1785)(in 1805-S7) in Stony Creek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. (S4,S7).

His wife Anna Maria is involved in the probate of his estate on 19 February 1805. (S15). So he probably died in late 1804 or early 1805.

Israel Burket is buried by his wife in the Daly Cemetery in Shade Township (then Stonycreek), Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The cemetery is also called Potts Cemetery. It is located 4 1/2 miles east of Central City on the Lambert Mountain Road. It's about 7 miles east of Israel's farm. Also buried there are Christopher Burket (Israel's oldest son) and a much later Israel Burket 1816-1866 who is the grandson of Christopher & great grandson of Israel Burket. [Source, Susan Holley Jackman] (S7,S9).
