Daniel Elliott and Hannah Cloyce

HUSBAND:
Daniel ELLIOTT.
Born (in 1662-S3)(between 1662 and 1665-S4,S13)(about 1665-S6,S9,S16), possibly in Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
He testified at the witch trials in 1692 that he was then about 27 years of age, which indicates that he was born about 1665 or 1666. (S10,S21).

The parents of Daniel Elliott cannot be definitely determined.
It is said that he is the son of Daniel ELLIOTT; and that he and and his father were two of the original settlers of Sudbury (or Marlboro). (S4,S6,S9,S23).
However, the connection to this Daniel cannot be verified.
In the testimony of Daniel Elliot at the Salem Witch trials, he was at the place of Nathaniel Ingersoll who was a relative of the George Ingersoll who was killed by Indians. George Ingersoll was killed by Indians in 1690, at the same time as this Daniel Elliott, said to be his father. This association with Nathaniel Ingersoll could give credence to their close association, but again is not certain proof.

It is also said that he is the son of Daniel Elliot and Dorcas Pope (S22), but no source for this is given. This Daniel and Dorcas were of Devonshire, England. So far, I see no connection of our Daniel to Devonshire, or connection of Daniel and Dorcas to New England.

What I thought was a very promising lead was said to be from the First Chuch of Salem record. Initially the sources I saw said the event in question was in 1681:
The First Church of Salem, Massachusetts records Daniel Elliot and two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary, and their mother, Mary Lambert. (S24,S26).
This would have put him in the right place at the right time. However, further looking (S27) says this event was in November 1688, not 1681.
Since Daniel and Hannah were married about 1686 (see next), a date of 1688 raises the question of why would Daniel appear in the Church record with his mother and siblings rather than with his spouse.
This also brings up another question. If our Daniel who married Hannah is not the one in the Church record in 1688, who would this other Daniel be?

WHAT DO WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN ABOUT DANIEL

There is quite a bit of confusion among researchers on when Daniel was first in Salem, Massachusetts (S4,S7d,S7f,S7g), but he was appears to be in Salem, Massachusetts at least by the time of his marriage.

Daniel married Hannah CLOYES (S16) in (1685-S7b)(1685 or 1686)(in 1686-S4,S7c)(by 1687-S16) in (Framingham-S4,S7c)(of Salem-S6)(in Framingham or Salem-S16), Massachusetts.
Since son Daniel was born in August 1687 (S17), they were probably married at least by 1686.
Since he was definitely in Salem in 1692, and Hannah and her family were living in Salem, and Hannah and Daniel were not in Framingham until 1693, the marriage most likely took place in Salem.

DANIEL AND THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS

Daniel Elliott was made famous by his testimony at the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. He testified at the witch trials that he was then about 27 years of age, which indicates that he was born about 1665-1666.

Daniel Elliott: Deposition for Elizabeth Proctor:
The testimony of Daniel elet aged 27 years or thear abouts who testifieth & saith that I being at the hous of leutennant ingasone on the 28 of march in the year 1692 thear being preasent one of the aflicted persons which cryed out and said thears goody procter William raiment juner being theare present told the garle he beleved she lyed for he saw nothing then goody ingerson told the garl she told aly for thear was nothing: then the garl said that she did it for sport they must have some sport. (S10,S21).

Daniel testified on behalf of his step-mother-in-law, Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyce (2nd wife of Peter Cloyes). {S3,S6,S8,S9,S10,S11,S12,S13,S14}.
Sarah was pronounced guilty, but escaped execution. Hannah's two step-aunts (Rebecca Nurse & Mary Easty) were hanged as witches. One report says Hannah's step mother Sarah escaped and friends hid her until spring when they moved to Framingham. (S9,S13).

MOVE TO FRAMINGHAM AND OTHER SETTLEMENTS

Following the trial, Daniel Elliot (Essex Antiquarian) and his family left Salem Village in the spring of 1693, and settled in Framingham, Massachusetts; along with the Cloyes family and other families named in the Salem Witch hunts. (S6,S7h,S20). Most of the children were thus born in Framingham, Massachusetts. (S17).

Daniel and his family moved again (about 1704-S6) to Oxford, Massachusetts. This must have been later since son Peter was born in Framingham in November 1704. (S17).

In 1709 Samuel Barton sold to Caleb Bridges (his brother-in-law) a meadow commonly called Mellon's Meadow in Farmingham, adjoining lands of Caleb Barton and Daniel Elliot. (S5).
Daniel recieved the grist mill and mill lot in Oxford from Gabriel Bernon in 1715. {S6}.

The first licensed public house in Oxford was kept by Daniel Eliott in 1714 for one year only, at the extreme north end of the village. (S24).

In 1720 Daniel sold his home lot and divided up the grist mill. By the town's permission, he resigned this portion of the mill to his sons Ebenezer and James, and half ownership and home lot to Richard Moore and a fourth ownership to Jonathan Provender, brother to Sarah Provender who had married son Daniel Junior. Before March 1720 he had moved to Sutton, Massachusetts (S4).

After leaving his grist mill he went a short distance upstream to Sutton and settled at the Pope farm (S6b). His sons Ebenezer and James themselves remained but a short time in Oxford, and sold their portion of the mill to Jonathan Provender. {S6}.

In Sutton, Daniel and his sons appear on the records as property owners (S6a), that of Daniel, the father, on 14 September 1722 as the purchaser of fifty acres in the 3rd division, on both sides of the great brook, near Coffin's farm.
Daniel Junior appears on 28 June 1728 as the purchaser of 25 acres in the 5th division, adjoining the land of his father Daniel Elliot.
The name of James Elliot appears on 15 July 1734 as purchaser of twelve and 1/2 acres of land in the 6th division, adjoining to his other land, where he now lives. (S25).

Daniel is thus said to have died sometime around 1728, as that is the last mention of him in the town records. (S3).
He is also said to have died (after 1731 at Oxford, Worcester Co., Massachusetts-S22), but the source for this is not given.

WIFE:
Hannah CLOYES (CLOYES-S16,S20)(CLOYCE)(CLOYSE)(CLOIS-S15)(CLAYES). [Familytree].
Born (about 1665)(in 1667)(about 1670-S4,S16), probably in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts; daughter of Peter CLOYES and Hannah LITTLEFIELD.

She, the daughter of Peter of Yorke, was christened on 5 August 1677 in Salem, Massachusetts. (S4,S15).

Hannah Cloyes married Daniel Elliott in (1685 or 1686)(in 1686-S4)(by 1687-S16) in (Salem-S?)(Framingham-S4)(in Framingham or Salem-S16), Massachusetts. Since son Daniel was born in August 1687 (S17), they were probably married during 1686.

It is said (S4,S22) that she died in New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut; but this is not supported in the Connecticut Records. She was alive at least as late as 1704, and living in Framingham, Massachusetts; when son Peter was born there. (S17).

CHILDREN of Daniel ELLIOTT and Hannah CLOYCE:
