THE NAME BRACKETT:
The name Brackett is said to be from Middle English and Old French brachet, denoting a type of hunting hound.
ORIGINS
The name Brackett is first found in Limousin, France.
Between the years 1451-1700 there are several entries in the records of the County of Norfolk in England for persons of the Brackett name. (S15).
There were prominent Brackett families throughout New England, but the purpose of this study is to focus on the Brackett families of Virginia. The Brackett families of the Carolinas appear to be an offshoot of the Virginia family. Hopefully, this study will help to document not only families, but also origins.

2. Majamin/Megeamin Brackett, b. 1813, d. 1888, Gilmer. Georgia.
3. Lewis Brackett, d. date unknown.
- [F88]. Thomas Brackett. He married Mary Moore on 24 September 1783 in Powhatan County, Virginia.
- [F89]. Nancy Brackett. she married Abner Johnson on March 14, 1783. Abner Johnson (1758-Oct. 22, 1850). Abner was born in Prince Edward Co., VA, shortly after his father had purchased the farm along Saylor’s Creek. No family or religious reason has been found for the naming of Abner or his brother Mordecai or sister Naomi.
Abner is said to have been wounded at the tide-turning battle of Guilford (N.C.) Courthouse although he made no such claim when he applied for a war pension.
In October 1777, while living in the Dan River valley, Abner volunteered for militia service under his neighbor, Capt. John Nelson; if not enough volunteered, then able-bodied men were drafted to fill out the unit. Capt. Nelson's company was organized under Col. Paseley's regiment with Charles Hughes as lieutenant, Allen Walker as sergeant and George Parks and Abner as ensigns. Col. Paseley's regiment from Guilford Co. was joined with Col. Saunders' regiment from Granville County under the command of Gen. Rutherford.
The troops reported to Guilford Court House and then marched to SC through Salisbury and Charlotte, NC and Camden, SC. The destination was Smoky Camp near the town of Purrysburgh, according to Abner's pension papers. The troops ranged across the Black Swamp and as far as Augusta and Savannah in Georgia.
Around May 10, 1778, Abner was discharged, and he made his way back to the Dan River settlement with his neighbor, Capt. Nelson.
In a second stint of duty, Abner was called up for three months as a bodyguard against British and Tory attacks for "Governor Martin," who lived in the same county and was traveling to Nutbush for a meeting of the state legislature. However, a quorum of legislators failed to attend.
Finally, he again was called to accompany Alexander Martin to "Marcurian Tavern" for another session of the legislature, but again sufficient members failed to gather.
(The royal governor of North Carolina at the time was Josiah Martin. Abner, however, accompanied Alexander Martin of Guilford Co., who was only a member of the NC legislature. Alexander later became governor of North Carolina after statehood, and Abner referred to him as governor out of habit and respect in the pension papers.)
Abner's pension affidavit lists no other action except in "scouting parties" when the neighbors "were engaged against the Tories," probably simply other neighbors or small troop units sympathetic to the British.
He produced the testimony of David Dobbins, his brother Gideon and sister-in-law Sarah (Mrs. William) Johnson, but only that of Sarah has survived. In general she confirmed that the entire family lived in households on the Dan River and Abner was absent for long periods to fight in the Revolution.
Stories of service in the Revolution were often subject to embellishment, and the tale persists that Abner fought and was wounded at the Battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781 despite no references in his pension papers. It is difficult to imagine that one of the bloodiest encounters of the Revolution occurred almost in his back yard and he didn't participate despite three tours of duty. Then again, the NC militia embarrassed itself at Guilford Court House, and he may have omitted the service from his official papers.
On March 15, 1781 about 2,000 men of British Gen. Cornwallis bore down on the Guilford Co. Courthouse near New Garden (NC) and the American forces under Gen. Nathanael Greene. The NC militia, the first line of defense, fired prematurely, panicked and then fled into nearby woods, exposing the VA militia. The reasons for the hasty retreat are unknown: no one from the North Carolina troops was wounded or killed in the initial action.
Like many military incidents, the British victory at Guilford Court House, however, really became a defeat, thanks to the heavy losses.
When the gunsmoke cleared, the Americans had withdrawn to the north — survivors of "one of the bloodiest (battles) of the war," says Page Smith, a historian of the Revolution and author of A New Era Now Begins. While the British took the courthouse area (now the site of Greensboro), their casualties came to 554, or one than one fourth of Cornwallis' troops. "It was a devastating setback," says Smith, and demonstrated that the American Continental Line (not the militia) could hold its own against British regulars.
Former British Prime Minister William Pitt later described the Battle of Guilford Court House as "the precursor of ruin to British supremacy in the South." The conflict would surge north over the next two years before Cornwallis surrendered to the Americans at Yorktown, VA.
Abner's wounds would have occurred in the disarray after the militia retreat. The Continental Line regulars suffered 144 dead or wounded while the militia men posted 83 wounded. The Americans, however, listed 1,084 missing or deserted, with 552 from the North Carolina militia.
He and Nancy Brackett were married on March 14, 1783. No traces have been found on the ancestry of Nancy; she does not appear to have been the Nancy Brackett who was born around 1761 (the same age) to Thomas and Judith Brackett of Amelia Co. However, she may have been the daughter of Thomas’ son Benjamin, who moved to that part of NC. [Note that the dates make this impossible.].
Abner and Nancy’s eldest children William Allen, Gideon, Elizabeth and Mary were born in Rockingham Co. before the family moved west.
Abner and his family likely came to Nashville in November 1788, with his sister Mary Ursula Pillow and her family. Abner is mentioned in Rockingham land records in 1786 and 1787, but no later; his son Abner Jr. told census takers he was born in TN in 1792; and Davidson Co. court records of the early 1790s refer to Abner Sr. In that era, little of the state was settled except for the eastern mountain counties and the Red River communities around Nashville, also known as Nashboro or French Lick.
Abner does not appear in the 1790 North Carolina census although his father and brothers William and Gideon were still located in Rockingham. Virtually all Tennessee censuses were destroyed before 1820, when Abner was in Maury Co. He may have moved back to NC briefly because one census shows his daughter Sarah Ann (Ginger) was born there in 1804. That likely was a census taker’s error or a family member’s mistaken memory because Abner’s daughter Elizabeth was married in Davidson Co., TN in April 1804, Abner appears on the Davidson Co. tax rolls in 1805.
The available records strongly suggest that Abner was a skilled tradesman or laborer, not a farmer. No evidence exists that – unlike his heavily landed ancestors –he ever owned real estate. Unlike most pioneer settlers who came to Middle Tennessee, Abner did not exercise his Revolutionary War land bounty rights. Instead, Abner in 1818 was among 20,485 soldiers who began drawing pensions for his Revolutionary War service under an 1816 law that allowed him $96 a year – or half pay – for five years in lieu of his land rights. He then qualified for lesser income under an 1820 congressional act for veterans who were indigent. Under laws that became effective in 1832, most veterans lost their pensions, and Abner had difficulties qualifying. But in 1838 he regained his rights and back pay to 1832.
This lack of land ownership also applies to his sons and most of his sons-in-law, except for William Kenamore. The 1823 Maury tax rolls show they only paid poll tax and held no real estate. But in southern Maury Co., numerous large plantations – especially those owned by Pillow cousins -- would have provided steady work for trades plied by Abner and his sons. Despite their lack of land – or disdain for farming – the Johnsons were considered influential by contemporaries because of their family connections in southern Maury.
When Abner first came to Maury from Davidson Co. is uncertain. An “A. Johnson” witnessed the deed for the sale of 183 acres in Bedford Co. from Joseph Rosborough to Joseph B. Porter for $350 on Sept. 4, 1810. Both Porter and Rosborough were residents of the Giles-Maury border area, and the deed was filed in Maury. In a more closely related act, an “A. Johnston” witnessed a September 29, 1812 deed involving land near his cousin Gideon Pillow’s plantation that also involved Peter Booker, whose family married into the Pillow clan.
Local histories suggest Abner moved his family first from Nashville to Culleoka or the Fountain Creek area in southeast Maury Co. where his brother William settled. Abner then shifted south of the county seat, Columbia, near the villages of Bigbyville and Southport. Abner and Nancy were firmly established in southern Maury Co., TN by 1820. They were close neighbors to their nephews and large plantation owners William and Gideon Pillow.
The 1820 census shows Abner and Nancy living with only sons Gideon and Mordecai and daughter Sarah Ann still in the home; the other children had married, but all lived nearby except William Allen, who died in 1819.
In 1850, Abner and Nancy were living in a household headed by their granddaughter, widow Matilda Kenamore McCaslin and her three children, with William and Mary Johnson Kenamore, Abner’s granddaughter Sarah Ann Johnson and grandson William C. Duke.
Abner died on Oct. 22, 1850, and Nancy is believed to have died in 1853. She was still alive in late 1852 when she transferred the pension benefits from Abner to herself. Their graves are unmarked, although his name is on a monument in Columbia, TN that honors Revolutionary veterans buried in Maury Co.

no additional, later records can be found in Virginia for William Brackett after 1755. Did he migrate to North Carolina? It is believed his wife was Sarah Atkinson, daughter of Thomas Atkinson and Sarah Hughes. (S40).
Probable CHILDREN of Willliam Brackett and Sarah Atkinson: Elizabeth Brackett [F104], Corbin Brackett [F105], John Brackett [F6], William Brackett Jr. [F106].
- [F95]. Nancy Brackett, daughter of John Brackett and Jane Devan (Devon).
- [F96]. George C. Brackett. He married Sarah F. Roberts. They moved from Virginia to Alabama in the 1840's. The were in Perry County, Alabama in 1850, and in Marengo County, Alabama in 1860. His wife, Sarah F.(Roberts), is buried in the cemetery in Osage, Texas. CHILDREN: Maria L., Sarah Jeter, John Joseph (Married Rebecca Ann Burge in Grove Hill, Clarke County, Alabama), Lucy J., Buena Vista, Camilla A., Thomas S., and George C.
- [F97]. Ludwell Brackett. He married Sallie Akins. On March 9, 1846, as recorded in the Kentucky Court Order Book 1845-46, page 405, he presented credentials to the Hopkins County Court that he had been ordained a minister by General Baptist Church and was recognized as such by the court after Travis Sisk (note the last name) and Abner Henson acted as surety. (S33). CHILDREN: Rebecca Brackett [F98].
- [F98]. Rebecca Brackett. Rebecca, born about 1820 in NC (per several census records), but could possibly also have been in Henrico County, Virginia. In a marriage record Rebecca Brackett lists her parents as Ludwell Brackett and Sallie Akins. She appears to be a daughter of Ludwell Brackett of Hopkins and Henderson Counties in Kentucky. (S33).
On her marriage application in Fayette Co., Ill. She states that this is her fifth marriage and that her father was Ludwell Brackett and her mother was Sallie Akins, although it looks like it is spelled Akens. Rebecca was really married and widowed five times in her life and when she was in her 80’s she was living in Illinois and surrounded by children from three marriages, grand children, great grandchildren and in laws. Her fifth husband was Sylvester Whalen. (S33).
- [F99]. Thomas Brackett. He married Elizabeth Ashe. Of Henrico County, Virginia. (S35). CHILDREN: John Brackett [F81].
Note that S39 indicates that a Thomas Brockett (not Brackett) and Elizabeth Ashe lived much earlier, in England:
The volumes of the Families of Ancient New Haven compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus and published in 1981 by the Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc. includes the Brockett family and the Tuttle family genealogies.
The Brockett family says that Christopher Brockett was born on 02 Jun 1749 in Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut and was the son of John and Jemima (Tuttle) Brockett. They say Christopher Brockett married Elizabeth Tuttle on 23 Nov 1769 in Wallingford. Elizabeth Tuttle was the daughter of Ezra and Hannah (Todd) Tuttle and was born about 1740 in New Haven, CT. They also have his first two children listed as Ezra Brockett and Jemima Brockett who married Abraham McIntyre in 1819 in Onongada, New York. Both Ezra and Jemima Brockett were born in New Haven, Connecticut. They also say that Christopher’s wife died before 1793. This all sounds the same as the genealogy of Christopher Brackett. The Brockett family genealogy picked up Christopher in a census of Manchester, Vermont and lists his children as Jemima who married Abraham McIntyre of Camillus, New York and Ezra of Bennington, VT 1796. At that point he is listed as the only known child of John and Jemima (Tuttle) Brockett.
Christopher Brockett’s father John Brockett was the son of John and Huldah (Earl) Brockett. This John Brockett was the son of Samuel and Sarah (Bradley) Brockett. Samuel Brockett was the son of John and Mary (Blackwell) Brockett the immigrants to New Haven Connecticut in 1632. The Brockett family comes from Hertfordshire, England where they had gained some prominence and can be traced back to about 1350 A. D.. This John Brockett was the son of John and Mary (Banninter) Brockett who was the son of Edward and Ethelred (Frodsham) Brockett. Edward Brockett was the son of John and Margaret (Bensted) Brockett. This John Brockett was the son of John and Dorothy (Huron) Brockett. This John Brockett was the son of John and Lucy (Pulter) Brockett. This John Brockett was born about 1460 and was the son of Edward and Elizabeth (Thwaytes) Brockett. Edward Brockett was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Ashe) Brockett. Thomas Brockett was the son of Thomas and Joan (DeFauconberg) Brockett. Thomas Brockett was born about 1363 A.D. (S39).
Since this family spells the name Brockett, and not Brackett, I presume they are entirely separate families, but note it here for future reference.
- [F100]. John Brackett. Born c1766 in Va. He married Sarah (born c1762,Va.). 1850 census of Knox Co., Ky., John Brackett(age 84,born in Va.) with Sarah(age 89,born in Va.). They moved to Bell County, Kentucky.
- [F101]. Thomas Brackett. Born about 1803 in N.C. and died between 1870-1878. This Thomas Brackett married (1) Elizabeth Downs who died about 1836.
This couple had children: Patience, James, William Bryson, Rachel, Robert, and Zacchariah.
Miles Philbeck wrote an article (about 1993-1994) for the periodical,The Gen.Society of Old Tryon Co., NC.(1993-1995?) in which he outlined a family "thought to be headed by one Thomas Brackett born about 1775." It is also said that Thomas' father was not THomas born in 1775, but was Edly Brackett.
Thomas married (no record/document cited) Catharine (Freeman) Burnett who "appears to be identical with the Catharine Burnett named in the will of Goerge Bender (Painter,Panther, Banther)." Catharine was probably raised by "George Painter and second wife Rebecca Freeman and named her first 2 children after them," (George and Rebecca). Second Wife: Catherine Burnette Freeman, had children, George, Rebecca, Benjamin B.
Philbeck further writes that although Catharine is listed as head of household in 1850 & 1860, Thomas Brackett was alive as "shown in the estate file of William Downs." Thomas Brackett married a 3rd time to Dorcas Hill in 1869, Henderson Co., NC. Third Wife,: Darcus Mary Hill, had 9 children.
- [F102]. Thomas Brackett. Marriage record for a Thomas Brackett and Polly Renshaw in NC dated 12/16/1799. Nancy Brackett born to Thomas & Polly BRACKETT on 3 November 1803. She married Joseph KEITH on 23 December 1820. They had a son Joseph Jr. born Nov. 22, 1821. Joseph Sr. died on Dec. 22, 1821. Nancy "KEITH" married (2) John RHOADS on 12 July 1822.
- [F103]. Phoebe Brackett. Daughter of Ludwell Brackett [F52] and Ann Elizabeth Cox. She married Caleb Hobson. (S38,S44).
- [F104]. Elizabeth Brackett. Born about 1775 in Norfolk County, Virginia; probably the daughter of William Brackett [F94] and Sarah Atkinson. She married Robert Culpepper on 6 January 1796 in Norfolk County, Virginia. surety William Brackett. Arthur Emmerson, the minister, recorded the marriage as 6 Jan 1796 rather than 1795. CHILDREN: George Wash. Culpepper, James Culpepper, William Culpepper, Fanny Culpepper, Elizbth Culpepper, Rebecca Culpepper, Thomas Culpepper.
- [F105]. Corbin Brackett. Probably the son of William Brackett [F94] and Sarah Atkinson. He married Elizabeth Holdness on 9 August 1791 in Norfolk County, Virginia. Deed of 9 October 1804: Deed Bk 42, p 47. Mary Hudson and her son John to Robert Culpepper, all of Portsmouth Parish, for £100, 100 acres on the south side of Deep Creek adj. William Carter, the heirs of Corbin Bracket, James Cherry, Thomas Culpepper, and Matthew Cherry. This land formerly belonged to Henry Culpepper. Excepted is a piece where William Carter and his wife now live. Wit: Arthur Cherry, John Bracket, and John Hudson.
- [F106]. William Brackett Jr. Probably the son of William Brackett [F94] and Sarah Atkinson. Heads of Families - Virginia, 1785, Norfolk County: William Brackett Jr. 5 White Souls. 1 Dwelling. 1 Other building.
- [F107]. Thomas Brackett. There is an entry on the Virginia Rent Rolls as early as 1704 for a Thomas Brackit; which could be the father of Thomas Brackett [F49]. (S6,S21).

historic Bracketts Farm in Green Springs. Louisa County, Virginia.
The farm is said to have been first owned by a William Hudson, who, in 1791, sold 321 acres of land to a family of Quakers named Thomas Brackett. In 1798, it became the property of Major David Watson Sr., of Ionia. Two years later Major Watson deeded Bracketts to his son, David, who remodeled and enlarged the house.
In 1798, Thomas Brackett sold 321 acres with a dwelling house, to Major James Watson, Sr., who deeded Bracketts to his son David, then 56 years old.
"Bracketts" was said to have been originally a log house, but when bought by David Watson, it was enlarged and weather boarded over. A brick in the chimney bears the date of 1806, with the initials "DW."
