David Howard and Thankful Almina Elston

HUSBAND:
David HOWARD. (David William HOWARD)(William David HOWARD-S4)(David C. HOWARD-S4,S5,S6,S9)(David Howard-S8)(David Crockett William Howard-S29). [Familytree].
Born 4 June 1824 (1830-S22) in Montgomery County, Virginia; son of John B. HOWARD and Deborah. (S17,S18,S19).

In the past, I have listed David's middle name as William. Other than family tradition, I can't find support for this.

So what was his middle name? Most sources list his name as simply David Howard:
David Howard. (S10,S15,S16,S18,S19,S20,S21,S22,S26).

Those that add a middle name are:
David C. Howard. (S9,S17).
David Crockett Howard.
David C. Crockett Howard. (S28).
David Crockett William Howard. (S29-Find-A-Grave).
David W. Howard. (S?)
David William Howard. (S?)

From this I see little support for a definite middle name. Most such records were developed later by family members. Primary sources created during his lifetime do not list a middle name. The most compelling evidence so far is Source 28, the Death Certificate of son William, on which his father is listed as David C. Crockett Howard.

It appears that using the middle name Crockett for children named David became quite popular about this time, thanks to Davy Crockett. An internet search reveals quite a number of them, but all with different wives and in different locations. I see no definite connection of the middle name to David.

He is a child in his family in the 1830 Census in Blacksburg, Montgomery, Virginia:

In the 1880 census, his widowed sister Mary, age 62, is living with them. (S20).
